I had a friend from NIT Jamshedpur. He was working in a reputed analytics firm in Gurugram. He was offered a fixed growth plan for next 5 years.

No doubt, he had a competitive pay of a corporate and perks of a startup. But he left the company in 15 months! Everyone wondered why?

Later on, I found that the company was not bad but he could not fit into that environment!

In the era of Uber, Ola, Flipkart, Paytm, Zomato, Swiggy, and OyoRooms, today startups are growing like anything in India.



People are often confused to choose between the flexible perks offered by startups and fixed career paths in big companies.

The most suitable option can be accessed by evaluating your psychological makeup- self confidence, risk tolerance and flexibility.



If you don’t mind putting extra hours and doing whatever it takes to succeed, a startup might be right for you.

But a startup has very limited space for mistakes. Depending on the financial backup, a startup may allow space for experimenting and failure.

So a high confidence level is expected in startups.

Many people join corporate but later on they do not fit in such environment.

For such people leaving a well established organization for a startup is about leaving many benefits like medical insurance, competitive pay, bonuses.

Now a days even some big companies offer startup perks like working from home, flexible time, onsite gym facility and more.

This may a better option for those who want a fixed career growth of the corporate along with the startup perks offered by the startups.

Summing up the things, I find that no hard and fast rules can decide the better between startups and big companies.

I think – Nothing is better than the other – they are just different. And choosing the better option depends on you!
